Rehabilitation of Deteriorated Reinforced Concrete Water Reservoir

This aging 6000 m3 capacity reinforced concrete water tank located in the Bogo District of Cebu, Philippines, showed signs of severe concrete deterioration including leaks and corrosion of the internal reinforcement due to its extended service life. The Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) specified that the tank had to be preserved through rehabilitation of the external wall without affecting existing operating conditions.

The supervising engineer of maintenance at LWUA performed a full time-cost-time comparison, between using conventional strengthening methods of concrete and steel jacketing and FYFE Asia’s FRP Composite System to strengthen the tank. The Composite System was recommended for the retrofitting work as a viable material to address simultaneously the needs of strengthening, corrosion protection and long-term durability.

Considering time and cost constrains, the Board of Trustees and General Manager of Bogo Water District decided to adopt the Composite System for this strengthening project. The system’s ease of installation, high strength and impermeable nature made it the system of choice for this project.
