With its proximity to the sea, the use of sea water for cooling of machinery and equipment is the most cost effective way for many of the petrochemical companies that dot the coast of Cilegon-Banten Indonesia. The company PT. Tri Polyta Indonesia is one of the leading manufacturers of polypropene in this petrochemical hub of Indonesia. Built more than 15 years ago, the Sea-Water Intake (SWI) facility needed structural repair, strengthening and corrosion protection with an available shut-down period of only 7 days.

The technical department of PT. Tri Polyta looked into various time efficient and cost effective ways to maintain their SWI facility duration of this shut-down period. The FYFE Asia’s FRP Composite Systems was introduced by Fyfe Asia’s Indonesian applicator to retrofit the RC slabs of the SWI facility. With its unique features of being light-weight, easy-to-install and, most importantly suitable for marine conditions, FYFE Asia’s Systems were selected for this project. It was the only System that can allowed for the retrofit to be done within the shut-down period and within the budget of the client.

As required under the strict guidelines for installation of the Systems, any existing defective concrete and corroded steel reinforcement were removed and then reinstated before the installation of it. The project was completed within the required time frame and satisfied all requirements of the client.

In June 2007, a year after the installation, an inspection was called by the client to check on the condition of the System. The System was in perfect condition with perfect bond to the concrete surface and no signs of defects.
