The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Complex is a sprawling new architectural marvel in Brunei’s capital Bandar Seri Begawan. Adjacent to this new complex is the beautifully restored Ash – Shaliheen Mosque.
The construction of the masonry structure with the Moroccan Moorish Andalusian style of architecture commenced in the mid-1990. The shell of the masonry structure including the massive domes, arches and minarets were meticulously constructed by hand using traditional materials and techniques with interior hand-cut mosaic wall tiles flown in from Morocco. Completion of the mosque was halted due the Asia Financial Crisis of 1998 and did not commence again until 2011 when the project to build that new PMO complex was finalized.
Exposed to the humid and wet environment of Borneo for more than a decade, the unfinished brick structure required restoration. The patented and minimally invasive FYFE Asia’s FRP Composite System was incorporated into the final design of the mosque. The FRP Composite System along with compatible FRP Anchors were used to further enhance and stabilize the structure from inside and outside of the 16 domes and the main vaulted arches that make up this magnificent structure.
The Ash – Shaliheen mosque was officially opened to the public in July 2012.
