Conveniently located in the most prestigious district of Orchard Road, the commercial and entertainment hub of Singapore, Meritus Mandarin Hotel was opened in 1971, occupying a single 36-storey block. It became a landmark for the Orchard road area when the second block, standing at 40 stories with 2 basements and 173 metres high, became the tallest development in the area when it opened in 1973. With these impressive images, 5-stars luxurious Meritus Mandarin Hotel was voted as one of the World’s Best Places to Stay in the 2004 Gold List of Conde’ Nast Traveler and into the list of The World’s Top 75 Hotels in 2003 of Institutional Investor.

After more than 35 years, the hotel was due for an upgrade to bring its facilities to the current standards. Strengthening and prolonging the durability of the structure was necessary. To fulfill these requirements with the hotel in operation and avoiding the existing services, the TYFO® Fibrwrap® Composite System was selected as the best solution because it affords advantages such as non-intrusive, localized disruption and having a speedy installation procedure.

Overall, 184 beams at the Basement 1 and 8 slabs of the Level 5 were strengthened using TYFO® SEH51-A and TYFO® S Epoxy to enhance the capacity of the structural members. The entire strengthening work at Meritus Mandarin Hotel was carried out over 3 months.
