Strengthening to Beams and Columns at Clarke Quay (Block C) using TYFO^® Fibrwrap^® System

Clarke Quay (Block C) situated beside the Singapore River was rebranded as “THE CANNERY” and reopened in phases starting end 2005. This food and beverage, entertainment and lifestyle development area, which spreads over 7,500 square meters and 2 storeys aims to become the round-the-clock entertainment destination precinct that will accommodate over 7,000 people. Clarke Quay, so named after the second British Governor of Singapore, Sir Andrew Clarke, became one of the pulses of the Singapore nightlife scene with the opening of THE CANNERY.

Built in the 1880s, the former pineapple cannery had to be strengthened to cater for change of use as well as new building codes. In this project, the light-weighted and easy to install TYFO^® Fibrwrap^® Composite System, was preferred over other traditional strengthening techniques. Overall, 77 beams and 50 slabs of this building were strengthened on the concept of wrapping structure using TYFO^® SEH 51A and TYFO^® S Epoxy to enhance the shear and flexural capacity of the structural members. The strengthening work at Clarke Quay (Block C) was carried out over 4 months.
