This road-over-bridge spanning four railway tracks of the Konkan Railway in Maharashtra, India required strengthening due to severe concrete and steel deterioration of the beams an slab due to age and weathering.

The challenge was to keep the existing rail lines in operation while the remedial works were being carried out.

The high-strength TYFO® SEH Fibrwrap® Composite System was proposed and adopted due to its ease, speed of installation and lightweight nature to strengthen the existing bridge beams for the shear and flexural deficiencies. The TYFO® Fibrwrap® Composite System uses aerospace technology and material, i.e. carbon/ glass/ aramid fibres and epoxy composites; it works on the concept of wrapping structural members such as columns, beams, slabs and walls to enhance their ductility and load carrying capacity.

The successful use of the TYFO® Fibrwrap® Composite System in this project demonstrates the effectiveness and speed in using engineered composites to upgrade important infrastructure.
