Shaw Plaza along Balestier Road underwent major upgrading works to rejuvenate the commercial areas, that is the first 5-storeys of the building. In doing so, there were many change of use that required the structure to carry much heavier loadings. As this was a design and build contract, the Main Contractor approached FYFE Asia to assist in the analysis, design and strengthening of the building structure.
The engineering part of the contract was made more challenging because the main columns standing several storeys high needed to be reshaped in order to fit the configuration envisaged by the architect. FYFE Asia’s design was submitted and approved by the Owner’s structural engineers and the Building and Control Authority of Singapore.
As FYFE Asia’s proposal, that entails beams and columns jacketing systems was the most efficient, technically sound and most competitive, it was engaged by the Main Contractor to carry out the construction works. Overall, the project was completed to the satisfaction of all parties.
