Seismic Strengthening to Residential Building

Japan has had a long history of earthquakes and seismic activity. It is an area of high seismicity because it is located near major tectonic plate boundaries and is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

This concrete residential building is located in the heart of residential and commercial Tokyo, was constructed in 1965 and was designed based on the old Japan building design code. The building consisted of 5 floors with floor area of 1500sqm.

Based on a seismic capacity analysis of the building, it was clear that the building needed strengthening on all floors and both directions. 38 columns in total were selected to be retrofitted by FYFE Asia.

All the residents were informed about the installation schedule and all the work was conducted without a major disruption to the residents’ daily life.
